I used Sun N Fun Construction to build the shell of a casita on our property and faced many frustrations. The build took over 2 ½ years for a rather simple 1 br! And that was just for the shell; I’m doing most of the interior, including the bathroom. To be fair part of the delays were due to problems getting supplies during the pandemic, it took a while for the permit and for our doors and windows to arrive. But I feel many of the delays were due to a combination of Jim not being able to line up subcontractors (he doesn’t do any of the work himself), as well as his propensity to go with the cheapest bids. So much of the work had to be redone and then it was very, very challenging to get the subcontractors back to fix their mistakes. During the last 6 months, at least, I was calling Jim and some of the subcontractors several times a week to finish the repairs.

I feel that many of the mistakes could have been avoided had Jim supervised them more. One example was that a 4” pocket door was installed in a 6” thick wall. I discovered the mistake after the wall board was hung, which meant that they had to remove wall board, jerry rig the pocket doors and rehang the drywall. This resulted in gaps in the trim around the doors, and it’s never going to look quite right.

Another example of sloppy work was with the fascia. The roof is a key architectural element of the building and was to be wrapped with 2 x 14s. I guess the subcontractors ran out or made mistakes with some of the 2 x 14s and so instead of building more, installed small pieces of plywood on one side in a patchwork that had many gaps. Had Jim been supervising the situation more closely, he might have caught this. It took weeks to get this fixed, and when they came they left portions of the soffits hanging down lower than the fascia. This was due to not cutting the ends of the rafters before hanging the fascia. It took yet another couple of months to get them back to fix this. Again, had Jim been supervising them, he would have likely caught it and avoided months of delays. There were many, many other examples of shoddy workmanship and shoddy oversight. I can not in good conscious recommend Sun N Fun.

The photos are a couple of examples AFTER the repairs. I finally gave up. Notice the warped edge to the roof, the holes and gaps.
