Sun Custom built our current house in early 2017. 6 years later (in mid-2023) we had a leak in the hot water manifold resulting in some water damage to an interior wall. Although they had no legal obligation to fix the issue, Jeff Buller and Sun Custom repaired the damage (mold remediation, sheetrock and baseboard replacement, texture, paint, etc.) at their expense. We had been given an estimate of several thousand dollars for a third party to perform the same work.

We had a few challenges with our build, but throughout the build process and in the years to follow Jeff always sought out a way to make things right. I am happy that he and Jerry Hogue are now the owners of the company as I feel they are builders first and salesmen second, and truly care about the quality of their work and their long-term reputation.

Not only did they provide me with a step-by-step project calendar, but they also had a team member involved and available for each step. My wife and I first met Kurt Dinnes and Jerry Hogue at Sun Custom homes in 2008. We had looked at many other local builders, but kept coming back to homes Sun Custom had built because of the quality of construction and unique designs. The attention to the minute details was noticeable in every home that we had walked through. We met with them and they meticulously laid out the build process and showed us an itemized list so there were no hidden fees or surprises once the build had started. Construction went smoothly and was completed exactly on time. We had a year warranty but we could not find a single issue wrong with the house that required their attention.

Seven years later, we were wanting to move into a larger house and we did not hesitate to contact Sun Custom again. By now Sun Custom had grown and Jeff and Steve had joined the Sun team as project managers for new construction. Kurt kept the process of building exactly the same. He showed us a detailed breakdown of the build cost and a timeline. He helped guide our decisions every step of the way, but always kept our vision of our house in mind. Jeff Buller was our project manager and handled all of our daily correspondences. He was responsive to our emails and text messages with questions we had. Never did we feel like we were left in the dark about any step in the process. Four years after we closed, our house is still what we dreamed it would be and have not used any part of the warranty that came with the house. We would recommend Sun Custom in a heartbeat to anyone looking for a custom built house. The service, design, and quality of their homes is a rare find and we are glad we found that in Sun Custom Homes.

During the time we worked with this builder, we experienced a lack of professionalism, broken promises and unexpected expenses. Here are just some of the issues we encountered during the build process:
-we have flooding in our backyard due to improper grading (of course we were promised all would be fine). We've asked them to fix this, but their go to is always "you signed the contract". We trusted their design and expertise not knowing.
-during granite installation in bathrooms/kitchen etc, they brought the wrong selections - I had to locate the original signed contract before they would replace with the correct granite. Everything was an argument.
-they painted the exterior wood pieces of our home instead of staining them as requested and per contract
-we were insulted several times by the Owner, Kurt re: finances and how much we were spending. When discussing having to write checks for changes he would say "well it's not like you're writing big checks". To me over $1000 is not a small amount of money.
-in the appliance store he insulted my husband and an argument ensued
-they built our mailbox on our neighbors property (didn't have the neighbor at closing). Moving this mailbox gave us much less acreage than what we thought we had. They also planted our tree in our front yard on the neighbors property line and we had to remove it at OUR cost.

The above are just SOME of the issues. That said, we relied on Sun Custom and their expertise to assist us with design. This is the first home I purchased and my first experience building. With all that we experienced I would never recommend them to anyone wanting to build a home. We did not feel valued as clients.

We could not be happier with Sun Custom Homes. As this being our first time to build, we did a bunch of research and met with several companies before choosing to partner with Sun. The nightmares we had heard about from other friends and family regarding building a home had us worried about building. This was a worry for no reason. The entire team was so helpful and a joy to work with throughout the entire process. The attention to detail and time that every team member put into our house is what truly sets them apart. From the original design layout, through construction, to the day we moved in, my wife and I can not imagine how it could have gone smoother. The very clear explanation of costs and contracts from the beginning laid out everything in complete detail and their were no questions when it came time to making decisions. Even after our 1 year warranty ran out and minor common things would need repair or I had a question about something, Sun was very responsive and would help fix the problem even though it was not required by them to do so.

My wife and I would suggest to anyone wanting to build a house in the metro area to please talk with Sun. Thank you Kurt, Jerry, Kim, Jeff, and the remainder of the team for our fabulous home!

Very satisfied with everything in our home with the exception of some paint issues. We continue to work with the builder to rectify these problems. Sun has been committed to fixing the paint problems and continues to do so. Will update once we have completed the repairs and have a resolution.
