I decided to have my house retrofitted when my earthquake insurance more than doubled upon my move to Walnut Creek. Everything about the project went incredibly well -- and the price was reasonable. I feel much safer now.

From the minute I signed the contract until I received the final inspection report I was kept in the information loop. Every document that was generated, even if not meant for me, was sent to me. The workers were fast, clean and showed me pictures of their work.

We used them for our earthquake retrofit project on our 70 year old home in Walnut Creek. Working with owner Hugh and his team was a real pleasure. Not only did they complete the task very well, but in under the estimated time. Our access opening to the crawl space is in the center of our home, meaning the workers needed to come in and out of our house for a few days. They all were extremely respectful and tidy--in every way. (We especially appreciated their care in not letting our three small wiggly dogs out on to our busy street! Bonus!!) It was a very pleasant experience all the way around and we have already contacted them for our next job! Owner brought up photos of the completed work--great job and great team with which to work!! HIGHLY recommend!

My mother has been talking about getting earthquake insurance for over 20 years now. She has lived in the same house in the East Bay for over 47 years. Frustrated by the unaffordable cost of earthquake insurance coupled with the never ending stories of hundreds of fire victims losing their fully fire insured homes, only to be met with these insurance companies not able to assist families for months and even years now, if ever at all, is extremely unnerving for a Senior citizen on a fixed income or anyone with any income for that matter.
All Californian’s know, “Its not if, its when.” We all would have earthquake insurance, heck our mortgage lenders would REQUIRE it, if it wasn’t so expensive. Be that as it may, Mom started researching ways in which she could protect herself form such a devastating disaster and called me about residential earthquake retrofit work. Now I am very familiar with Commercial property/building retrofit work, but I had yet to hear of ways in which to help secure residential homes against a big quake.
I found the company ‘Rooted Retrofitting’ located right here in the Bay Area. After a very informative phone conversation with one of the co-owners Hugh, he offered to come out to Mom’s and give her a free estimate. Both owners, Hugh and Tod, came to the home, zipped up the overalls and dove under the house which was constructed with a very tight crawl space (hard to maneuver, I’ve been under there). After their inspection they sat us down and with very clear pictures and explained exactly how the house was originally constructed. Back then the builder merely took screws and drilled the sill into the foundation. After seeing the pictures and confirming this fact in the garage where you can see the foundation and the original “pinning”, we were ah struck at how seemingly unstable this house sat upon its foundation.
Hugh and Tod showed us the current code for new construction using very large bracing designed exactly for preventing a house from slipping off of its foundation. Mom received a very professional detailed quote within 3 days and after doing some quick math (retrofit work versus possible earthquake destruction costs) mom decided this was defiantly the best form of insurance for her.
First and foremost ‘Rooted Retrofitting’ proved to be fair, timely, professional and above all provided a detailed history, then current code education in a manner that Mom seemed to easily understand, making her confident with her decisions (5 stars). But that’s not the only reason I wrote this very detailed review. Living through all of our natural disasters over the last 50 years I have never felt less secure about losing a home. This testimonial is a direct reflection of my lack of knowledge as to these safety precautions available today and to help educate others and keep their families as safe as possible.
