My housing journey began several years prior to the covid19 pandemic and before the housing market turned upside down. For a nonprofit professional like myself, who had given his life to serving others as a housing case manager and advocate for individuals of lower socio-economic status; homeownership was often a dream out of reach. To give everyone some perspective, I was making $36, 000 as a housing case manager and by the time taxes were taken out annually, I brought home $30,000. I had quite a few things stacked against me in the beginning. My credit was in shambles after years of medical issues and I had no money saved for a down payment. One lender even had the unmitigated gall to say that I would never be a homeowner. No one could see it, but I wanted a house, and I knew God wanted it for me as well. There was certainly disappoint along the way, in the end we had 6 houses under contract and $7000 lost in earnest money (let's just say I was stubborn and determined lol). After every inspection the report seemed to unleash a flood of problems, but Jason T. Hyman stuck by me. Things got so bad that Jason and his lovely wife Brittany Hyman even discussed trying to find a home for me that could be fixed it up and sold to me in order for my FHA loan to qualify. Let's stop and really think about that type of gesture, its beyond measure. However, over the next 3 years things improved, income increased, credit jumped up, found a great lender (who knew how to calculate student loan debt), was granted WELLS Fargo LIFT funds, as well as City of Houston down payment assistance funds and by the 7th contract I was a homeowner. It had been 20 years since I had been able to call any place home and I am still understanding each day that I know longer have to be afraid which is baffling to me. Reality still hasn't hit me all the way, but Jason T. Hyman has had a lot to do with helping me navigate this chapter in my life. I often felt I had not succeeded in life and for once I finally had a when. Oh, and did I mention I had picked all the previous 6 houses and the first time I let him pick the house that's the one I get with $50,000 in equity, how's that for irony.
God has ordered my footsteps and the direction I have taken. Don't get weary on your journey, don't give out, don't give in. What he has done for me, he will CERTAINLY do for you.
