Several years ago I lost my sense of smell and taste. The doctor who was treating me at the time was not providing any relief or answers. I soon changed doctors and my new doctor referred me to Dr. Gallivan. Dr. Gallivan made some suggestions which then resulted in me getting the proper diagnosis. He also performed sinus surgery. After surgery, and with a correct diagnosis and treatment, I am still able to taste & smell 5 years post surgery. I am VERY thankful for Dr. Gallivan!

I've had chronic nosebleeds since I was a child, occasionally severe enough to require medical intervention. There have been periods of remission. I'm now 72, and for some reason they started up again a couple of months ago. After four in one month, I knew I needed a cautery, and I was referred to Dr. Gallivan at Central Oregon ENT in Bend. He is truly a specialist in nosebleeds, and he performed a cautery for me that I hope will take care of my problem indefinitely. I highly recommend this very professional doctor.

I was literally 5 minutes late for an appointment and the office staff member called the doctor regarding my "tardiness". The staff member, Jacquie, let me know that Dr. Basanez would not be able to see me because I was late. It became apparent that Dr. Basanez wasn't even available. He was seeing a patient and he was behind. Instead of handling this situation with honesty, Dr. Basanez and the office staff member decided to use my tardiness as an excuse to reschedule. Since I was already a patient, I wanted to learn if this was their standard protocol for arriving 5 minutes late. The office manager, Candice, spoke with me in the lobby. She, apparently, was informed about my situation. So, not only was the decision to reschedule my visit (a 3 week wait with a pretty serious medical condition) well known by the office staff member and Dr. Basanez, but it was known by the office manager. This started to feel "off". I started to feel a little violated. For example, I am being used to serve their good image: I was late versus Dr. Basanez was behind; my best interests versus meeting their scheduling needs and not keeping the doctor past 5 o'clock when they close, as my appointment was an hour before 5:00. All the aforementioned was not too much to swallow. However, my slowly gathered red flags about Central Oregon Ear Nose and Throat started to become pretty clear in the following moments. Candice (office manager) began to explain why Dr. Basanez would not be able to see me. Her explanation included my private health information and Dr. Basanez's medical recommendations/treatment plan for my condition that had not even been observed. Mind you, her explanation was in the lobby in front of four patients and their entire office staff members. Dr. Basanez and Candice, both, violated HIPPA - our basic human right. Dr. Basanez should know better since he is in the medical profession. Candice should also know better since she is overseeing confidential matters. Jacquie was naive regarding the HIPPA breaches from both Dr. Basanez and Candice. She, too, should know better as she is dealing with confidentiality and its seriousness. I decided to advocate for myself and my rights. This reality is not okay. I should not have to be informed to have a proper experience with a physician's place of practice. I let Candice know that I would like to speak to Dr. Basanez and/or the owners of this practice (Dr. Gallivan and Dr. Verheyden), in attempts to prevent this type of violation with any other patients. Candice was unwilling to provide me with a resolution. Instead she decided to call the police and they were our "mediators". Since law enforcement cannot enforce HIPPA, I had to leave. I was a patient who was not seen. My medical conditions were not addressed. My HIPPA rights were violated and they labeled me as a "problem patient" with no resolution. I am pretty beside myself with the clear ethical and legal violations that occurred, but they spun the entire situation to suit their best interests.

Ryan Gallivan is a doctor who actually listens. When we went to see him for my spouse's broken nose, he didn't try to sell us on an unnecessary surgery.
