Mixed feelings about NGBD. While in the process of making an offer on a home, they were prompt about providing estimates for needed repairs. Once we closed on the house and tried to move onto the actual repairs is when the challenges showed up.

Donnie is a nice guy and provided some excellent suggestions but obviously is not good at details and follow-up. Example is our changing from a 30 inch cook top to a 36 inch which would require cutting granite and significant changes to the cabinets above it. Donnie and I stood in front of the cabinets and he explained why we would have to do a lot of cabinet work to keep it centered. When I got the quote, I sent back an email reminding him that there was a change in cook top size. I then followed up with call.

When it came down to finally doing the work, the field superintendent, Burt (super nice guy, in a bad situation) informed me that they didn't know the cook top was a different size and the cabinet guy would have to give a quote to build a new wall of cabinets. Luckily I was able to point out the email exchange and messages.

In the end, I no longer had confidence in them to complete the work. For tasks that I had a written estimate, I was billed as quoted. Where I had requested a quote but had not received it prior to the work starting, I felt I was significantly overcharged.

I have switched to a different contractor and am enjoying an improved experience with better communication and better attention to detail.

I called Donnie at the advice of my Realtor to take care of an urgent issue with my house before the inspection and closing date. He seemed to understand the urgency of the need when I spoke with him on the phone, and agreed to come out the following day. His administrative assistant called me back a little while later to confirm a time. A half hour after he was supposed to arrive, I called to check in, but there was no answer at his office. Someone else called me back shortly after and said that Donnie "forgot" to come. No apology, no offer to make it right - just said "sometimes these things happen." I have to be on a plane in <24 hours and now have to manage this repair from several states away, when this could have been handled yesterday. If you're in the market for a building contractor, my suggestion is to hire someone who knows how to use a calendar.
