I used EJD Engineering for a tenant improvement (TI) project in the City of Ontario a while back. It was a simple subdivision of an existing building with a new roll-up door cut in on one section of the building. I signed the company’s contract for the TI, but Ernest agreed to my handwritten clause; “the project is not deemed complete until permits are issued from the city.” There were more than three revisions to the plans and no sign that they were soon to be approved, so I withheld payments on the project until Earnest could fix this dilemma. But that was not the case; instead, he threatened to quit the project if full payment was not rendered. When I say threaten, I mean the tone and vocabulary he used. I paid him the balance, and the project never got finished. I am not new to tenant improvements and have done new construction, and I know the construction industry has a “buyer beware” attitude, but an engineer with this kind of attitude? I am lost. Every time I met with the plan checker, he poked at me because of the errors in the plans.

I want to share my disappointment with Ernest DeLeon and EJD Engineering. Ernest was a referral from a friend of ours and we hired him and his company on July 30, 2018 to be our architect for an add-on of about 700 sqft. Everything started out great, they met at our home to discuss the floor plan, were in constant communication and were proactive with communication. The floor plan was basically done and the final step before structural engineering was the front elevations of the home. We were presented with 6 ideas and decided on a hybrid of 2 of them. We had a call with Ernest in October 28th discussing in detail what we wanted. On November 15th we received an email from Ernest apologizing for the delay and that he would get on it. Keep in mind this is just a modification of an elevation he presented to us. We emailed again on December 6th and received another apology email on December 12th. Still as of December 20th we did not have the elevations we discussed with him October 28th. There were several phone calls to him with zero response. I don’t know why he decided to quit on our job but he did. We asked for our money back and of course he refused. $2,550 down the drain because he decided to quit on us. I guess the $8500 we were going to pay him for the job wasn’t important enough to him. We are extremely disappointed and have hired a new architect, unfortunately we’ve lost 6 months because of Ernest DeLeon and EJD Engineering.
