We had an amazing new patient visit with Dr. Wilson today. Both of my kids have a rare genetic lipid disorder that Dr. Wilson is familiar with. He patiently explained their diagnosis in accessible language and gave us some great insight into their care, treatment, and prognosis. He even gave us a little wallet card to carry in case of emergency that explains the diagnosis and includes his contact info.

Every staff member we interacted with went above and beyond to take care of our whole family. They brought toys and coloring books to entertain the kids, they took their time with us, and overall made us feel seen and heard.

We are looking forward to our future visits with Dr. Wilson and team!

Today I visited Dr. Wilson with my son due to concerns about a pathogenic variant for a rare genetic disease that was uncovered during Whole Genome Sequencing. Due to the low frequency of this variant, our previous questions were not able to be answered even by a Medical Geneticist. After contacting GARD through the NIH, we were put in touch with Dr. Wilson as a provider who is familiar with the disease.

Dr. Wilson accepted my son as a patient and was able to see him within a few weeks. We flew in from out of state and I can’t stress enough how thoughtful the entire staff and Dr. Wilson were during today’s visit. For starters, they offered complimentary daycare on site for siblings and offered to watch my daughter during the appointment. They also gave her a gift bag afterwards.

Then two Child Life Specialists came into the room with mt son on two occasions to bring him toys and occupy him while offering to answer any questions he might have. This was a first for me! It would be absolutely amazing if every specialist office had these types of amenities. I felt as if I was receiving some type of premium service akin to a concierge medicine experience! While these types of frills are not necessarily an indicator of the overall quality of the treatment plan a physician may put forward, it was certainly a combination of Dr. Wilson’s patience in explaining his reasoning and these factors that made me feel the experience exceeded my expectations.

Dr. Wilson spent well over an hour speaking to me about my son and also made it clear as I listened to him speak that he had taken the time to review my son’s entire medical chart and reach out to other providers beforehand for clarification. If there were more physicians in the world like Dr. Wilson then the world would be a better place! Their dietician was fantastic, as well as the nurses, the laboratory staff, and registration. I wish that we lived locally because I would use Cook Children’s Hospital for everything from this day forward.
