I do not recommend Alterra. They only care about closing the deal, and after you move into your home, they are unhelpful. If I could give zero stars, I would.

We have experienced issues with our HVAC and lawncare since moving in, and Alterra has offered band-aid alternatives to real solutions. Due to Alterra's lack of cooperation since moving into our home, we are left paying a hefty bill to have a second zone installed with the hopes it will fix the lack of airflow we receive upstairs. This is going to cost us a few thousand dollars. When discussing with the HVAC company why we are experiencing a lack of airflow to our 2nd floor, a gentleman with 30 years of experience informed us that Alterra chose to have the HVAC as a single zone in a two story home even against their recommendation. He shared it was common practice for Alterra to go this route as it is a cheaper alternative and meets the bare minimum HVAC standards for Dane County. If you want a home that meets the bare minimum standards, then Alterra is the company for you. If you want to be comfortable in your own home, I recommend finding another builder.

When it comes to our lawn, every lawn around us has sod. I will say, not every house around us was built by Alterra; however, when I asked if we could get sod, they assured us the spray on lawn was a top of the line product. I should have read the fine print as the only top of line product we received was the largest crab grass that I have ever seen which covers our entire lawn. Alterra will not help fix our lawn, so we will be left tearing it up and fixing it ourselves, which I anticipate will be a couple thousand dollars.

All in all, we have asked owners from Alterra to come over multiple times. One owner stopped over once to look at our lawn, but other than that, we deal with the warranty manager who provides zero input and has zero authority to make these decisions. If you are looking to build or buy an almost finished home from Alterra, I strongly recommend considering another builder.
